Lower Leg Pain is a common presentation . The lower leg involves the 2 large bones Tibia and Fibula , large muscle groups ( anterior , posterior , deep posterior and lateral compartments) that assist with function of the foot and ankle. Lower leg pain is a common complaint of distance runners.
Painful legs below the knee and above the ankle can be experienced by children , active athletes or those standing for long periods. Leg pain can described as muscle pain and may ache during exercise, resting or leg symptoms at night.
A Physical assessment and a history of the pattern of leg pain by your Podiatrist will usually narrow down what is causing pain in the legs. Exercise induced leg pain is common with treatment approach dependent on the tissue affected. Treatment may include resting, strength and flexibility rehab, dry needling, activity modifications and use of foot orthoses/shoe changes.
